Sculpture - Summary:
With the title Degrow, sculptor Bene Bergado presents a specific exhibition project for the Azkuna Zentroa Exhibition Hall which represents a return of the artist to Bilbao and in which biographical and ideological aspects coalesce.
In this new work, Bene Bergado proposes the infinitive Degrow “against the unbounded exponential growth of production and consumption in our so-called developed societies”. The fact is that “we live wastefully squandering with complete disregard for the resources that nature has conserved for millions of years, which has led us to a global crisis in which we are facing a depletion of natural resources”, she cautions.
This call to action runs through the exhibition curated by the artist Juan Luis Moraza. In this respect, the installations and sculptures dialogue with the need for a deceleration, through the awareness of the limits in order to adapt ourselves to a foreseeable future of low energy and inevitable changes in life. As a large diagram which verbalises different codes and systems, Degrow shows the dynamic strain between art and what it is about: between its artistic processes and its more explicit themes”, as explained by the curator.
Highlighted in the exhibition are the installations Tierra quemada (Burnt Earth), which consists of an electrical tower fragmented into four pieces turned into a shelters or habitats; and Generador (Generator) which, in the form of works piled up in a warehouse, it “operates as a battery that generates the intensity of a work whose wealth and complexity engages the spectator to an awareness of what is real”.
In this way, Degrow is not only a content or a theme of this exhibition but likewise, and above all, a commitment which is part of the artistic experience.- Related activities:
