Deus Ex Machina is a performance and participatory art project to listen to the multiple and singular ways in which an entire country speaks. From a Call Centre installed in the Azkuna Zentroa Exhibition Hall, the many voices which inhabit the Basque Country and other parts of Spain are brought together. Each call is made through an open script of very diverse questions geared towards producing unimagined conversations to delve into the historical unconscious of the territory. The word is used to shape how people imagine their own world and their resulting mood. The questions seek to awaken the subconscious of those who answer the phone and find a voice on the other end of the telephone line calling from a cultural centre. The voices of those who remain on the line and answer the scripted questions will be heard in real time within the performance space. Thus, Deus Ex Machina comprises an exhibition of voices in an artistic proposal that moves between theatre and installation.
