Jaio, Karmele (1970- )
Karmele Jaio Eiguren (Vitoria-Gasteiz, 1970) writer and journalist.

She has written three collections of stories; Hamabost zauri [Fifteen Wounds] (Elkar, 2004; Heridas crónicas, 2010, Ttarttalo), Zu bezain ahul [As Weak As You] (2007, Elkar) and Ez naiz ni [Not Me] (2102, Elkar), two novels; Amaren eskuak [My Mother’s Hands] (2006, Elkar; Las manos de mi madre, Ttarttalo, 2008) and Musika airean [Music in the Air] (2010, Elkar; Música en el aire, Ttarttalo, 2013), and a book of poetry, Orain hilak ditugu (2015, Elkar).

Amaren eskuak [My Mother’s Hands], which was well received by Basque readers, has been adapted for the screen by Mireia Gabilondo and was presented at the San Sebastian International Film Festival. Her stories have also been adapted for the theater: in 2010, Ramón Barea directed her work Ecografías [Ultrasound], which was based on the author’s short story of the same title. Her short stories has been published in Best European Fiction 2017 antology and in many other antologies.
