Summary:

Behatokia continues in March with a meeting on gentrification and the right to the city. This third situation room will take place in Tinglados del Arenal.

As stated by the Left Half Rotation artist collective, “Gentrification is not a lady’s name”. It is a term that refers to the transformation process of an urban space via reconstruction or rehabilitation due to changes in market dynamics coupled with an increase in demand for housing and commercial spaces. A global phenomenon which has been highlighted by social scientists in recent decades, since it is about reoccupying a central space in cities by some social classes in detriment to others.
Art, culture and creative classes play a key role in giving a new meaning to these spaces and promoting these sorts of dynamics. However, there are also artists who work with communities affected by gentrification, supporting them in their resistance strategies and helping create awareness of the problem.

Participants: Diego Peris and Nancy Garín
