Summary:
In recent years, a rebellious wave has questioned the political models we live under: neoliberalism and Chinese capital communism; new oligarchies and death throes of colonialism, racism and patriarchy; transitions (Spanish or that of post-Communist states of Eastern Europe); drifts of Arabian springs and corrupt waste of Sandinism, etc. Just a virus was lacking to stir the world…, and it appeared. With it came the emergency as a mental state and a state of emergency, lockdown, reconversion of the domestic space into work station, the apotheosis of screens, fear, etc. The pandemic has reached such hegemonic proportions that it partially overlaps and partially reinforces previous critical demands.
The texts in this collective book connect these circumstances dealing with them as stations along a same journey of malaise. According to their real or apparent differences, today’s manners of power share an ever more overwhelming market economy in addition to an inflamed state authoritarianism in different proportions. This mishmash is a determining factor in this volume, ready to battle against this crisis - these crises- and endow us with tools to rethink it from gender and new social subjects; eroticism and difference; the cross between local and transnational; the different edges of cultural and political experience; contemporary rituals, and the challenges of climate change which can’t wait.
The signatures collected herein are not content to simply put forward a wealthy range of topics. They also attend to the way such topics are included within a vision of the essay that overflows its borders as a literary genre to become a way of being in this world. It is an essay that is text and texture, writing and performance, literature and experience, art, life and politics. It takes place in both the agora and the street, pointing at power and rearming society.
