In the 1920s, during its last decade before the advent of sound cinema, silent film experienced a period of extraordinary artistic splendour. The films of that era by directors such as Lang, Muenau, Lubitsch, Stroheim, Eisenstein, Vidor, etc. are works of the highest order in the history of cinema. During those years, American comedy also experienced a golden age in which the brilliant figure of Charles Chaplin stood out as the undisputed idol of critics and audiences alike, and only one other artist was able to match his level of success: Buster Keaton.
It has been a long time since Buster Keaton's films have been seen in this city, probably since the spring of 1982, when the Teatro Campos screened a series dedicated to his work. The Zinemateka now offers us the opportunity to enjoy and admire the timeless films of this great artist of the 20th century, the century of cinema.
