Mayer, Mónica (1954- )
Mónica Mayer (Mexico DF, 1954) read visual arts at the ENAP and obtained a Master’s degree in Art Sociology from Goddard College (USA). Since the start of her career, she has been an artist in disagreement with the definitions of art. She has taken an integral approach in which, in addition to performances, drawings and interventions, she considers her artistic production includes writing, teaching and playing an active role the community. She is considered the pioneer of performance in Mexico and internationally she is acknowledged as the precursor of feminist art in Latin America. In 1983, she founded the feminist art group entitled ’Polvo de Gallina Negra’ with Maris Bustamante, and since 1989 she has been working with Victor Lerma on the ’Pinto mi Raya’ project. She is a member of the Sistema Nacional de Creadores (National Creators System)
