- Summary:
“Council of Wise Women”, a project undertaken by Sra Polaroiska (Alaitz Arenzana & María Ibarretxe) as Azkuna Zentroa – Alhóndiga Bilbao Associated Artists, concludes with this expanded fanzine which includes stories, reflections and experiences shared by the 9 older women who have taken part in the sessions: Dolores Juliano, Amaia Lasa, Garbiñe Mendizabal, Luisa Menéndez, Adelina Moya, Arantxa Urretabizkaia, Margarita Ledo, Rosa María Calaf and Teresa Catalán.
As explained by the creators, the “Council of Wise Women” arose from the need to generate references from a gender perspective, highlighting the importance of the work and knowledge of women over 70 today. The “knowledge” imaginarium is still limited to the male factor and today you will often hear “There are no women in this field.” However, that is not true. In fact, it is not that there are not any, but rather, we do not know who they are.”
Inter-generational connection, complicity and affection have been the key factors of this project, carried out between 2019 and 2021, where each wise woman has had an artist as a dance partner. Thus, Abigail Lazkoz, Contxita Herrero, Bea Aparicio, Juana García Pozuelo, Naiara Goikoetxea, Ruth Juan, Higi Vandis, Leire Urbeltz and Raisa Álava have provided their graphic narrative to the protagonists’ oral story.
In the “Council of Wise Women” fanzine, Sra Polaroiska has included this experience in a travel journal format. An experience in which both known and unknown women have become references thanks to their professional and life’s journey.- Related activities:
